History of the Folch and Cardona

 


 

FOLCH Y CARDONA: Catalán origin, proceeding from the royal house of France, having as a branch Don Raimundo Folch, who arrive in Catalonia to fight against the moorish invasion under command of Charlemagne, who rewarded him in the year 791 the noble rank of Vicount of Cardona, ascended to the category of County by King Pedro IV of Aragon in the year 1.375 in favor of Don Hugo de Cardona, and ascended to Dutchie the 17th of April of 1491 by the Catholic Monarchs Fernando and Isabel in favor of Don Juan-Ramon Folch de Cardona, 5th Count of this House. The Coat of Arms represents a red shield embedded with three golden thistle forming an inverted triangle.

OUTSTANDING  PERSONALITIES  AND EVENTS ALONG THE HISTORY 

Through out the history of Spain and Catalonia its own, region situated in the northern part of the mediterranean coast which during the medieval age was an independent kingdom, the men and women of this lineage contributed and were keys to the forging of the nation, since the battle of Lepanto upto the discovery and colonization of America. In 1714 the city of  Barcelona and Cardona were the last bastion of heroic catalan resistance that succumbed to the troops of King Philip V in defense of Catalonia. After this defeat they were persued and suffered reprisals thus causing more the dispertion through out the spanish territories and towards the americas. An important branch established in Valencia during the reconquering of this region from the Moorish invation. En 1663 Caterina, the only daughter of Lluis de Arago´Folch de Cardona y Córdoba, the twelfth Count of Prades, Duke of Segorb and  Cardona and Count of de Empuries, wedded Juan Francisco de la Cerda, Duke of Medinacelli. At the beginning of the 18th century, Prades, Cardona and other possesions was absored by  Fernández de Córdoba, new Dukes of Medinacelli. At present the Duke's archives (Folch de Cardona)  is located in Seville, actual seat of the house of Medinacelli where Doña Victoria Eugenia Fernández de Córdoba is the actual dutchess of Medinacelli.

 Pere Antoni d´Aragó Folc de Cardona i Fernández de Córdoba, descendiente de Fernando el Católico, virrey de Nápoles e hijo del más famoso virrey de Cataluña, Enric d´Aragó i Folc de Cardona y de su esposa Catalina Fernández de Córdoba, donó su magnífica biblioteca al monasterio de poblet ( finales del siglo XVII )
